I am leaving Red Hat. Onward. March 29, 2009

Posted by Sacha in JBoss.

Eigher Mönch and Jüngfrau from home on the 27th of March 2009JBoss has been part of my life for exactly 8 years and now is time for me to move on.

From my first contribution to JBoss 2.x, to setting up JBoss EMEA operations throughout the RHT acquisition, these have been incredible times for me.

So, why am I leaving now? Well, JBoss is kicking and well alive. Sales are booming, the product pipeline is full and new talents are energizing our ranks. We are now 33 months after the acquisition of JBoss by Red Hat and it is fair to say it is a great success.

Where am I going next? First of all, I am not completely leaving Red Hat, I’ll remain available as an external advisor to Paul Cormier. But other than that, I don’t have any clear plans outside of spending the next 6 months actively doing nothing.

1. Pascal Pujo - March 29, 2009

Hello Sacha,

3 years ago, you and Noël R. already did to me the same “poisson d’avril”.
The story was you were fed up with Marc, so you decided to leave JBoss Inc. with a few guys to start a new business with them.

This year, the story is :
1) you’re leaving RHT because everything is fine
2) your plan is to do… nothing.

Elle est bien bonne 🙂

2. David Dossot - March 29, 2009

An open future ahead of you… this sounds truly exciting! All the best.

3. agoncal - March 29, 2009

Sacha, well, it’s sad to see you leave, but I’m sure it will be for better future. When we met in December you said you were wiring a hole bunch of electronic stuff in your house. I’m sure that in 6 months you’ll be able to automatically play music when you enter your kitchen or toilets ;o)

Enjoy, have fun, and hope to see you soon in different horizons

4. Bob Bickel - March 29, 2009

I just want to thank you for all you have done for JBoss, Red Hat and me. You are leaving the company in fantastic shape, and I know the people following in your footsteps will do a fine job.

I’ve written more about my recollections of your contributions in my blog – http://bobbickel.blogspot.com/2009/03/sacha-retiring-from-red-hat-jboss.html.

Onward, my friend!
Bob Bickel

5. Tom Kincaid - March 29, 2009

Best of luck to you Sacha. You have been a fantastic member of the greater Java community during your time at JBoss. Looking forward to seeing you emerge in another venue real soon. All the best to you.

6. Lennart Petersson - March 29, 2009

Hi Sacha,

It’s tough to see all the great people leaving JBoss – for me that also has been close to JBoss for 8 years. The product is still strong and moving on better then ever – but I still miss the good old days 🙂

I first met you at the London training 2001 and heard your talk about how you had implemented HA in JBoss – at that time we were both learning JBoss with good teachers as Marc and Juha. Did you ever then dream of what would happen the coming 8 years 🙂

with regards and hope of a good future,

Redpill Linpro

7. Eduardo Pelegri-Llopart - March 29, 2009

Best wishes in your future projects, Sacha. 6 months doing nothing sounds really good right now! – eduard/o

8. Shaun Connolly - March 30, 2009

A job well done Sacha! You have absolutely earned your upcoming time off. Enjoy the time with your family.

Onward! 🙂

– Shaun

9. Savio Rodrigues - March 30, 2009

Hi Sacha, best wishes – If you’re looking for ideas for keeping busy I’d really recommend doing nothing in Croatia…the water in Havr is clearer than you can ever imagine.

Hope our paths cross again.

10. Daniel Brum - March 30, 2009

Best of luck and enjoy the next 6 months!

11. Sacha - March 30, 2009

Oh yes, I remember that day, I thought I would pass over 😉 A un de ces 4 à Pâââris 🙂

I’ll need more than six month, the electrician manage to screw up things on a regular basis. However, I am able to switch on lights on and off at this point 😉

Lennart, I remember that training very well, you and I were quietly sitting trying to compile the concepts being thrown on us by Juha and Marc – this was one of the numerous viral shots who transformed me in a JBossian.

Savio, I’ll think about Croatia – my sister went there last year, it was indeed beautiful. But to be candid, it is going to be hard to make me change my usual yearly love target: Corsica! Corsica is not just about how beautiful it is, it is about food, people and… and something I cannot explain 🙂

Bob, you’ll remain one of my very few mentors.

David, Tom, Eduardo and Daniel, yes 6 months sounds good – but it is just a theoretical duration. Maybe it will be 4, maybe 9… In any case, it is probably going to take me 10 years before I stop all of my business blabla by “When I was at JBoss/RHT, we used to…” – I hate it when others do it every two sentences, years after they’ve left their previous company. I’ll be one of those guys now 😉

12. Marek - March 30, 2009

Sacha I wish you all the best for you and your family. I still remember the Geneva training in 2002 when you and Adrian introduced the 3.0 version. Since then I was convinced that this project will be a success in the future and you were an important part of that success story!

With best regards,

Sacha - April 1, 2009

Thanks Marek. I remember JBoss 3.0.0 was our Linux 2.4.0 i.e. we wouldn’t be able to release a GA release, it took ages. Unlike with 5.0.0 where it was a breeze 😉

13. James Buick - March 30, 2009

Good riddance!

14. Mark Little - March 30, 2009

Sacha, good luck and have a well deserved rest! It has been great working with you over the past few years.

Sacha - April 1, 2009

Mark, you’ll do a great job replacing me.

Oh, and don’t screw it up 😉

15. Lisbeth Rydahl Andersen - March 30, 2009

I know that you will be missed by many!!!!!!

Really, I hope that you can take the time to spend some quality time with your family!
….But im not sure that you can stay “calm” for very long ;o)!!

Take care

Sacha - April 1, 2009

Thanks Lisbeth, when I look behind at all of the good things which happened at JBoss, seeing you both happy in “your new country” is one of them 🙂

16. Rich Sharples - March 30, 2009

Sacha, it’s only been a year since I joined Red Hat but I’ve enjoyed working with you and learned plenty. Good luck for the future and enjoy the break – after 8 years of hard grind – you deserve some R&R and time with with your family.

29. alesj - April 1, 2009

I guess apart from finding the time for you and your two girls,
you can now even find some time to contribute to MC. 😉

Anyway, thanks for all the advice and kind words (@ LeCerf while Adrian was ranting :-)).
Knowing you were always there for us, is something I’ll definitely miss.

Onward, and hope to still see you sometime in Neuchatel. 😉

30. Dimitris - April 2, 2009

Given Sacha’s sense of humor I’ve almost wished it was an April Fool’s joke. (so darn close to the date) 🙂

And just so the people know – I have never had a better boss.

Sacha, all the very best!
